Luna’s Transformation

For Kara Willis, a high school English and Theatre teacher in The Dalles, adopting Luna at the end of March 2024 was more than a decision—it was a heartfelt calling. After the loss of her beloved cat of 16 years, Kara knew her home felt incomplete. “I’d always wanted a dog…and it just felt like the right time in my life,” she shared.

While browsing the Hood River Adopt A Dog website, Kara saw Luna’s photo and felt an instant connection. “I felt something tug at my heart strings and knew I had to meet her,” Kara said. Luna’s backstory was heartbreaking—she had been abandoned, tied to a sign outside the shelter during the harsh winter. Shelter staff described Luna as “feral” and deeply anxious. Despite this, when Kara met her, she was moved by Luna’s resilience and decided to take a chance. “I knew I wanted to take her home,” Kara said.

Those first few months were challenging, but Kara’s patience and love paid off. “It took a while to earn Luna’s trust, but I won her over with lots of hikes, treats and hand feeding,,” Kara explained. Today, Luna is unrecognizable from the skittish dog she once was. “I can proudly say Luna is a very different dog than she was eight months ago. She is the biggest love bug and would love to be a lap dog—despite weighing 85 pounds!”

Luna’s favorite activities include hiking, running, and “patrolling the perimeter” to keep her family safe (earning her the nickname “Sarge”). At home, she’s a cuddly, loyal companion who never leaves Kara’s side. “Luna is the best part of my day, every day,” Kara shared. “The unconditional love she expresses is extraordinary.”
