BB’s Big Heart

For Britta Willson of The Dalles, adopting BB in March 2024 was more than adding a dog to her family—it was embracing an inspiring new companion.

Britta, who advocates for residents in long-term care facilities as a Deputy Ombudsman, also cares deeply about making a difference in her community. Adopting from a local shelter was a natural choice for her and her husband, Booth.

“I found BB through a friend who sent me her posting. Her cute picture and very small size instantly stood out to me,” Britta shared. But it was BB’s story of resilience that truly tugged at her heartstrings. “She was born partially paralyzed, and her spirit and determination were incredible despite her physical challenges.”

After meeting BB, Britta took her home on a trial basis. “Her sweet personality and expressive eyes convinced me to give it a try. After a few days, I couldn’t imagine bringing her back—I bawled my eyes out at the thought. That’s when I knew we were meant to be together.”

At first, BB was shy, but she soon adapted to her new surroundings, bonding with Britta, Booth, and her two new dog siblings. “She prefers to be a homebody and snuggle on the couch, but she’s also thriving. Her back legs are stronger, she can stand and wag her tail, and she’s very mobile without her wheelchair.”

BB’s playful energy has brightened Britta’s home. “She makes me laugh out loud multiple times a day. She’s also energized our older dogs—they’re more playful now, too.” For Britta, BB’s story isn’t just about rescue—it’s about showing that animals with disabilities have so much love to give. “Adopting BB has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
